In regards to Rodent control, what can I expect?

Cats were first domesticated by the Egyptians to replace ferrets, which were the first animal domesticated for rodent control. Feral cats (today’s barn cats, or cats that survive by hunting for their food) are not as common as they were a generation ago, and as a result we have a bigger rodent problem than a few decades ago.

Does the quality of food make a big difference?

Cats are carnivores, and they won’t stop eating until they get enough meat into their digestive systems. Cheaper cat foods have grains and other things that cat’s don’t digest well, and what this means is that they’re actually more expensive because the cat will eat more of this food in order to get enough meat into its system. This cheap diet also makes the litter box a lot stinkier, and it affects the cat’s health – as someone who spends a lot of time with cats, I can just look at a cat’s coat and tell you if it’s eating well or not – well fed cats have a silky, shiny coat that only comes from eating the right kind of food.

What can you expect from your cat?

Unlike dogs, which are pack animals, cats are solitary hunters, and this gives them very different personalities. I tell my customers that if they want constant devotion, then they want a dog. But if they want another personality in the house, and one that doesn’t need a lot of care and attention, then a kitten is the way to go.
